Many people live in older houses in neighbourhoods such as Strathcona, Garneau, Downtown, and Oliver, built in the late 1800s and early 1900s. These buildings may have outdated electrical wiring or plumbing, or be located in damp areas that significantly affect appliance performance, causing them to wear out faster. For instance, issues like uneven water pressure, hard water, worn outlets, and outdated connections can affect all your household and commercial appliances.

Even newer or well-maintained buildings can affect appliance performance due to improper installation or heavy use.

Try These DIY Tips If Your Appliance Isn’t Working Properly

Refrigerator & Freezer

  • Not cooling. Make sure the door seals are clean and fully closed, and avoid opening the door too often.
  • Water leaking. Check the drip pan and ensure the drain hole isn’t clogged.
  • Frost buildup. Remove heavy frost manually with a plastic scraper (never use sharp objects) and keep vents unobstructed.

Washer

  • Not spinning/draining. First, check the drain hose for kinks or clogs.
  • Leaks. Tighten all external hoses and carefully remove any soap buildup from the gasket.
  • Noises/vibrations. Make sure the washer is level and avoid putting heavy items into the drum.

Dishwasher

  • Not drying. Remove the lint screen and clean it thoroughly, and reinstall it.
  • Not filling with water. Make sure the valve under the sink is fully open.
  • Water not draining. Check and clean the filter at the bottom of the dishwasher.

Oven/Stov

  • Uneven heating in an oven. Inspect the rubber gasket around the oven door. If it’s dirty or not sealing well, wipe it clean
  • Burners not igniting/heating. Make sure burners are seated properly, and check for debris in the gas ports or on the electric coils.
  • Control issues. Turn the oven off at the breaker for 1–2 minutes, then restore power.

Dryer

  • Not drying. Clean the lint filter and check the vent hose for blockages.
  • Noises. Remove small objects from pockets and check the drum for loose items.
  • Overheating. Ensure proper airflow in the vent and don’t overload the dryer.

Qaisar Salem and his partner from Appliance Repair fixed my clothes washer. They were prompt, notified me when they were coming, knowledgeable, efficient, repectful and explained what was wrong and what they could do to fix it. They cleaned up after their work and tested the washer. I would definitely use this company again.
